Say Hello to Randy Thomas

Mercy Ministries Pastor

When did you join MISSION staff?

Started part-time May of 2007 and went full-time July of 2010.

Where did you go to college?

How much space do you have? I think I’m in God’s "slow learners" group

  • Oklahoma Christian University
  • Harding Graduate School of Religion
  • Brite Divinity
  • Northern Baptist Theological Seminary
  • Liberty University

What is your family like?

I married Kathy Williams of Albuquerque on August 20, 1976 (yep, got the side-burns and leisure suit pictures to prove it!) We have three kids, all of whom are married and out of the house. (Yea!) Grant is our oldest. He and his wife, Dixie, live in Albuquerque and have our three grandkids: Delaney, Aidan and Bridey. Natalie, our daughter, and her husband, Eric, live in Portland, OR. And our youngest son, Chase, and his wife Leah, live in Santa Monica, CA.

Where were you born?

Wichita, KS...way back in the 50’s when Lucy still loved Desi and gasoline was less than 20 cents a gallon (but I don’t think the price of gas affected their marriage).

What was your most recent purchase?

A keyless Irish Flute made by Rob Forbes. It’s a honker!

What is your current soundtrack?

“The History Man” by Flook (yep, they play Irish Traditional Music with a jazz twist)

What is something most people don't know about you?

As a nerdy Senior in High School, I got in trouble for manipulating the substitute teacher in my advanced chemistry class. I convinced him it was okay for me to make a powdery contact explosive. I then covertly walked around the school spreading the powder in the major hallways and waited for people to jump as they stepped on the powder and it went “pow”……I had to come back after school with a toothbrush and clean up the floor. Who said chemistry couldn’t be fun?

What are you reading right now?

Love reading the prayers of Joseph Parker (1830-1902).  He was the minister at the City Temple in London.  Best known for his multi-volume commentary: Preaching Through the Bible.  Reading his prayers is like wading through streams of both humility and power.

If you could vacation anywhere, where would it be?

Give me a mountain cabin, with Kathy by my side as our grandkids play in a nearby babbling brook, and I’m good. Very good.

Who are two people you'd like to meet:

The guy who built our house - so I can ask about its weird plumbing and my future great grandson – to find out how I can best bless him.
